What is a truck tractor?

A “truck tractor” is actually a subset of trucks that describe a type of Class 8 truck used to pull a semi-trailer and heavier loads than a regular truck, or straight truck. Commonly referred to as a “tractor”, it’s completely different from a farm tractor. However, the one commonality between a truck tractor and a farm tractor is they both are capable of pulling heavy loads. Other names for truck tractors include semi-trucks, big rigs, 18-wheelers, and tractor-trailers.

They’re considered Class 8 trucks because their GVWR, or gross vehicle weight rating, exceeds 33,000 lbs / 14.9 MT, and their height ranges anywhere from 6.5 to 10 ft. Their special design allows them to pull trailers, which are wagon-like parts that are able to be hauled for long distances. Trailers can attach to truck tractors either by a hitch or by a fifth wheel mounted over the rear axle.

What are the different types of truck tractors?

1. Day Cab

A day cab truck tractor is designed for large hauls over a shorter period of time or day trip. The cab does not include an on-the-road sleeping compartment.

2. Flat Roof Sleeper

A flat roof sleeper truck tractor is designed for large hauls over a longer distance and time period. There is additional space attached to the cab that includes a compartment with a bed for sleep and rest, and storage space for holding personal items. The term “flat roof sleeper” means there is less headspace than other sleeper trucks.

3. Mid-Roof Sleeper

A mid roof sleeper truck tractor is similar to a flat roof sleeper, but it has a slightly higher and rounded roof for more headspace. In addition to a bed and storage space, a mid roof sleeper often includes a TV and more storage compartments.

4. Raised Roof Sleeper

A raised roof sleeper truck tractor is similar to other sleepers, but it has a raised roof, or high rise roof, which is the most headspace included in a sleeper truck. It also features a premium sound system, flat-screen TV, and side storage tower.

Why are truck tractors important?

Without truck tractors and truck drivers, grocery stores and department stores would be empty, family homes would have no furniture, building materials would never arrive at construction sites, and that’s only the beginning.

In 2021, truck tractors moved 10.93 billion tons of freight, which represented 72.2% of total domestic tons shipped that year. Accomplishing something so monumental required 38.9 million Class 8 heavy duty trucks and more than 3.5 million drivers. Year after year, trucking generates more revenue than any other industry in the United States.
